Week 5

This week in the Possum Room, I focused on creating a safe and fun space for the children to grow and learn. I conducted a thorough safety check of our play areas, wiped down surfaces, and cleared away any potential hazards to ensure that the children could explore their environment safely. I also checked the UV index and made sure every child had their sunscreen and hats on, following the sun-smart guidelines (Cancer Council Victoria, 1900). This aligns with the National Quality Standards (NQS), especially Quality Area 2, which is all about Children’s Health and Safety(Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority, 2020).
Indoors, I made sure the nappy area was clean and sanitised, changed out any necessary items, and gave the dining area a good scrub. I also double-checked that the babies’ cots were safe and ready to use(Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority, 2020). This week, we spent time in the sandpit, where the children had so much fun digging and building sandcastles. This engaging activity helped them develop their physical coordination and work together to create their sandcastle. I loved seeing them share ideas and take turns, it was a great opportunity for them to learn important social skills and build respectful relationships with each other (ACECQA, 2016). The sandpit encouraged their creativity and helped them connect with nature, which illustrates just how valuable play can be in our learning environment.
We also spent some time in the indoor baby area, where the children enjoyed dressing up the dolls. This pretend play was wonderful for fostering empathy and providing them with insights into different community roles and family dynamics. To make things even more interactive, I introduced some cooking activities. The children got into working together, and I could see how this helped them build social skills. They practised following recipes and learned the importance of teamwork and respecting each other’s ideas (Beloglovsky and Daly, 2015). I made sure to stay engaged and responsive throughout all our activities. I communicated what we were doing and encouraged their input, which helped demonstrate professionalism and respect for their learning styles. It truly reinforced the importance of a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
